78 Comments Air India aka North Indian Racist Pig
Allow me to explain the rather racist title. Aren’t there racists in south india? Of course, yes. Our chief minister is a fantastic example for this. What happened in air India, however is something worth mentioning. This post is in no way intended to take a dig at north Indians or insult any racial community but just named for the sake of calling a spade a spade. I find this attitude of companies that have no context sensitive approach to things completely insulting and pointless.
The story goes like this. I fly to Singapore often. Almost every month for work reasons. I always fly Singapore Airlines. Their service and professionalism is one of the best ive seen in times from any company or service provider. Luck sometimes does not favor you. Its one of those times when a sudden Singapore travel was scheduled i did not get tickets on Singapore Airlines in the last minute and good old Air India came to the rescue. Thanks to recession the 3000 rs. cheaper ticket compared to jet made Air India the default choice.
Never in my life have i seen such “i don’t give a flaming fuck” attitude in a service that it just beats the crap out of me. I’m writing this blog post barely 2 hours after i landed in chennai after my Air India flight. I don’t want the forget the spec of gems i was thrown at in the form of service so let me bring up as many star pointers before i forget them…
1. Chennai is the capital of Tamilnadu. Tamil is the Official Language of Tamilnadu & Chennai. Singapore has close to approx. 1/3rd tamil population, tamil is an official language there as well.
2. The crowd you are serving is all tamil crowd. Not one north indian passenger, not one white/black/asian/hispanic passenger.
Given this context what is the need for an out and out Hindi announcement on the PA system. The facial expressions of half the people in the flight was blank. They were oblivious to your communication as our politicians are oblivious to accusations and shame. Why can’t you use some common sense. Singapore Airlines is not even an indian company. The first thing they do when you get on their flight is a tamil announcement. All their menu cards are tamil too. Actually they’re written in Tamil/Malay/English.
I find it highly irritating when someone tries to coax a language down someone’s throat when its 100% irrelevant to a given context. I agree with the fact that Hindi is our national language and its a responsibility we should carry to know it. Personally i do but it is unfair to expect every tom, dick and harry to do so because you are dealing with india. A country where the number of official languages recognized for communication across states is 14. Its not like you really want to spread hindi an shit. You even switched OFF the safety announcement when the hindi version was playing, bravo!
I have many more wonderful pointers to discuss but all of it will make this post a long and boring one. I will follow this up with another exclusive “Air India” bashing post.
And yes, i will also add. All of the crew in the Air India flight spoke good galeej tamil but preferred to speak hindi and spoke tamil only when responded to in tamil or say a blank response. Seriously WTF?!

It is true that India doesn’t have a National language. When I took off from Chennai to London by British Airways, the first announcement was in Tamil followed by English. The Hindi imposition on Tamils and on Tamil Nadu must be stopped.It is offensive and disgusting when some one in Chennai airport says, “bag kholo”. I was raised in the Eastern part of the country and I am very fluent with Hindi but I love to speak Tamil (which is my mother tongue) while in my state/city and don’t expect people to insist me in talking to them in Hindi. That is the reason why we have English in Chennai. Why don’t the Hindi speakers speak in English? Who understands Tamil in North if I were to insist North Indians to speak in Tamil? Tamil, in fact is the only language from the Indian Union which is official in Singapore, Sri Lanka and is widely used in Malaysia, Mauritius and other parts of the world. I don’t see anything wrong in Tamils taking pride of their language and culture. I am a proud Tamilian and an Indian. I need not know Hindi to be an Indian. Yaadhum Oore Yavrum Kaeleer!

Hindi is Not the National Language of India and Never will be…Google this…India uses two Languages for Official Communication…English and the ‘Useless’ Hindi..and has 18 Official Languages like Tamil, Teugu as seen on the Currency Notes.

Hindi is a 300-350 years old Pigdin language while Tamil has a History of over 2000 years and Classical. Hindi fellows can go and screw themselves for talking crap about Tamil. It will be good for us Tamils to know Tamil, English and maybe even Chinese. But not Hindi…if you know Hindi you can only use it for talking with Cowdung people and maybe some cattle! The author only said that he sees Air India as racist. What is so wrong with that? When one flies somewhere it is good when the airline uses the native language to make announcements to all passengers. So why you need godamm Hindi on a flight from Chennnai to Malaysia or Singapore?
Hindi is not National language, only for communication for the North Indians, who dont know or learn English. Then why President Kalam never spoke Hindi even one day?

I loved it last year, when Raj Thackeray’s boys slapped an MLA in Maharashtra Assembly for talking Hindi. We heard the slap all the way in Chennai! My first reaction was, it was good to see someone in other parts of India, Western India standing up for their language against the Hindi Bullies. So Tamils were justified after all about Hindi Imposition all these years.
I work in an IT company in Chennai and we had 3 guys from North India who had the audacity to talk badly about Tamils sitting here in Chennai. They would talk amongst in Hindi and make jokes of Tamils. We(-all the other employees)had a meeting with the manager and then conveyed to the three Hindis that if they ever spoke Hindi in the office again then they would be fired! Within 2 months all the three quietly left. Any more of this Hindi in our company and we will kick arse. At least we in Tamilnadu are glad to see others in India, the Marathis and Assamese and even some Kannadas standing up to this stupid Hindi.
I pity this author for saying Hindi is National language. How come this when many Tamils dont even consider India as our nation at all?
For all Tamils, Tamilnadu should be free of India. Just as people in Kashmir and Assam and Nagaland and Manipur want, we Tamils should call in the UN and hold Plebiscite for freedom from these bloody Hindians. Let the people of Tamilnadu decide on this Peacefully and without Violence.
What have Tamils ever got from India? We are treated as Second Class Citizens. Our resources are plundered. Our fishermen, 527 of them have been shot the past 20 years by Sri Lanka Navy, so where did bloody useless Indian Navy help? If it was Gujarat fishermen under attack from Pakistan, then Indian Navy will help. If people of Punjab are attacked by Pakistan Army shells, then India fires back. What then for Tamils?
It is better for Tamilnadu to be free of these
Hindi parasites. We Tamils will be free with our own Flag, our Constitution, our Passport and so on. When small places like Kosovo, North Timor with less than One million people can be free, we Tamils should be free too. We will be much better off than being under the Corrupt system of India. We Tamils have Rights under UN Charter. We therefore challenge Delhi to allow in UN for Plebiscite from India. Delhi is full of Cowards. Delhi promised freedom for Kashmiris and now are holding 5 Million Kasmiris as Slaves with State Terror. Whole world knows what is going on! Backlash Against North Indians in Mumbai
The North Indian controversy was waiting to happen. What is surprising though is that it happened in Mumbai and not in any southern metropolis. We need to delve deeper into the reasons behind recent events. [Editor's Note: Author is referring to certain events in Mumbai (Bombay) in early 2008. Members of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), headed by Raj Thakeray, attacked north Indian taxi drivers and street vendors as part of their opposition to north Indians living in Mumbai not respecting Maharashtrian culture and also wanting to make Hindi an official language of Mumbai City Corporation. Mumbai is the largest city and business centre in the western state of Maharashtra.]
From the time of independence until recently, all decisions were north centric. This was not surprising as New Delhi is located in the north. The power centre being in the north created a false feeling that all other regions were mere vassals of the BIMARU States [BIMARU States - The northern states of Bihar, Madya Pradesh, Rajastan and Uttar Pradesh]. Northeasterners were referred to derisively as Chinks, the Southerners as Madrasi or even as Iddly-dosa, and the Marathis as Ghatis. Whether it was industry, culture or any other field the Southerner was run down constantly. South Indian industry could not obtain licenses, could not influence policy and were relegated to the backyard. For everything one had to run to New Delhi, which neither understood the South Indian/Eastern Indian/Western Indian languages or ethos. Most other Indians could not but help feeling like second-class citizens vis a vis their Northern brethren.

Hindi was pushed down the throats of southerners. Knowledge of Hindi was equated with patriotism. I wonder why these patriotic North Indians did not similarly push Tamil or Kannada down their own throats! In fact there are large parts of southern India which neither understand nor speak Hindi. Instead of encouraging integration, this Hindi arrogance fostered the North- South divide. This same arrogant attitude is being displayed by our Railways minister. He arbitrarily dropped South Indian food from the railways catering menu.
Today Bangalore and even Chennai (Madras) are being swamped by North Indians coming for jobs, bringing with them their arrogance, brashness and intolerance. By and large they do not want to learn the local language, nor understand the culture and ethos. In fact everyone is expected to converse in Hindi. Lack of understanding of this language is greeted with amazement and arrogance. They could do well to learn from the early Marwari and Sindhi settlers who have successfully integrated locally and are viewed with affection rather than hostility.
What has made the situation worse is the fact that today, economic development is largely being driven from the South. In the earlier days many a southerner needed to go North to earn a living. Today he/she does not need to do so, however he is facing an invasion which is threatening his language, culture and livelihood. The North Indian coming South must learn to respect other languages, culture and people. Until then I am afraid he will have to face the kind of backlash we are seeing in Mumbai. Unfortunately it is the poor taxi drivers and street vendors who would face the music for the insensitive boorishness of their more educated brothers.

Our family is from Tamilnadu. My husband is a software consultant. I live with my husband and our two daughters in USA. A few years ago we wanted to come home to visit our family.
I went to a travel agency to buy airline tickets. A lady was at the front office. I told her our preferred dates of travel. Then I added, “Any airline other than Air India, please”. She looked at me at askance, a pause, then said, “Not Air India?” I said, “Any airline other than Air India. We do not like hearing those Hindi announcements all through the flight.”
“Don’t know Hindi?”, she asked.
“We are from Tamilnadu. We don’t like hearing those Hindi announcements. We oppose Hindi as India’s official language.”
The lady smiled with an amused expression and started looking for flights. At this time a gentleman came out from the back office. I recognized that he was Sikh, from his dress. The lady told him, “She is from Tamilnadu. She does not want to fly Air India because she does not want to listen to Hindi announcements.”
He said, “OK. Book her in another airline.” Then he turned to me, “Good for you. We respect Tamil Nadu for standing up to the Indian Government. We have our problems with it too.”
He then turned to the lady and said, “We should stop using Air India too.” She smiled.
All of my husband’s family avoids using Indian Government run businesses. I know it is not always possible. Whenever we can, we use alternate services even if it is a little inconvenient. We almost always travel by bus instead of using Indian Railways. We don’t have accounts with Indian Government run banks. No one in our extended family flies Air India or Indian Airlines, whether on business travel or personal travel or on tourism. Why should a Dubai to Thiruvanathapuram (Trivandrum) flight make announcements in Hindi and English? They should be in Malayalam, Arabic and English. Why should the announcements in Indian Airlines flights between Thiruchirapalli (Trichi) and Chennai (Madras) be in Hindi and English? They should be in Tamil and English.
Hindi and Hindian Arrogance Test our Patience

1. Hindi Arrogance
We used hear reports of some Hindi tourists and business people who come to Tamil Nadu attempting to speak with local restaurant, hotel and transportation employees in Hindi, and when these employees do not understand Hindi they grudgingly converse in English and then walk away murmuring insults about “stupid Masrasis not understanding Hindi” or “anti-national Madrasis refusing to talk in the national language”. Although we were irritated about it, we tolerated this arrogant behavior. [(1) Madrasis is what some North Indians call Tamils even today because Tamil Nadu was called Madras State over four decades ago. (2) Indian constitution does not call Hindi the national language; Hindi is declared the official language, and Tamils oppose it.]
During the past decade more and more Hindi speakers came to Tamil Nadu to work in Information Technology companies (IT Companies), factories and construction projects. Even after living in Tamil Nadu for years, many of them did not learn Tamil and continue to attempt to use Hindi and if it fails use English with, may be, a few words of Tamil mixed in. This is different from the behavior of other language groups, be it Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali or Punjabi, who never attempt to conduct social and business transactions in their languages. Initially they use English but soon they learn enough Tamil for daily use. Hindian behavior and attitude is different. Local Tamil people bit their tongue and tolerated this behavior. Hindian behavior has now reached a level that tests our patience.
2. Accept the Hindi Birth Certificate Or Else
A man from Rajasthan State (a Hindi-belt state), living in Tamil Nadu State for 13 years, went to enroll his son at a school. When he submitted his son’s birth certificate in Hindi, the clerk asked him to submit an English translation certified by a notary. Although getting a notarized English translation is not difficult, the man refused to submit an English translation. Instead of getting an English translation, the man went to the school again and again and demanded that they accept the Hindi translation and each time the school refused. Then he complained to a “sympathetic” news reporter and NDTV website published a report with the title “Chennai school takes anti-Hindi stand” (NDTV website, Decemnber 12, 2008). 3. Celebrate North Indian Festivals Or Else
A much more disturbing news was reported in several newspapers in March 2009. Students from North Indian states (mostly Hindi belt states) demanded that Holi festival be declared a holiday at Annamalai University, Tamilnadu. When Vice-Chancellor Ramanathan refused, these students engaged in violence damaging university property. Holi is a north Indian holiday and is not declared a holiday in any of the four southern states. This incidence again shows the arrogance of Hindians. Does any northern university declare holiday for Tamil Nadu’s Pongal or Kerala’s Onam? Our students do not protest. They observe the local North Indian holidays and live within the cultural norms of that region. Hindians, on the other hand, do not observe local culture but demand their culture be observed in Tamil Nadu institutions. What arrogance?
The Holi holiday protest is different from the North Indian student violence that occurred later after a North Indian (Bihar) student Gautam Kumar died in a traffic accident. North Indian students, not the South Indian students, demanded that Annamalai University declare a holiday to mourn Gautam Kumar’s death. Of course, the Vice-Chancellor refused. Students do die in accidents in any university and universities do not declare holidays to mourn them. North Indian students attacked the vice-chancellor’s house and then, according to news reports, “went on a rampage”. University was closed for several days. You will notice a trend here. It is North Indian students, joining together as a group, challenge university authority and go on rampage. Local students as well as other South Indian students are not participating. They lose valuable college days because colleges are closed for days following the violence. Annamalai University is a well-respected 80-year old institution. Only in the past few years have large numbers of North Indian students come to study there.
4. Serve North Indian Food Or Else
Another incidence of North Indian students indulging in violence, this time against Tamil students as well as college officials, occurred in Hindustan Institute of Engineering Technology in Padur near Chennai, Tamilnadu in November 2008. North Indian students beat up the hostel warden complaining that food is of low quality. Tamil students said that the food is all right and came to the rescue of the warden. “Bad food” seems to be a code word for “South India food” for these North Indian students. Otherwise how would you explain only the North Indian students saying food is bad and Tamil students saying food is all right? Once this north-south divide was raised, some North Indians said that they object to using beef instead of chicken. Again Tamil students said that the meat is chicken. Are Tamil students fools not to be able to differentiate between beef and chicken? I also want to point out that, like most North Indians, most Tamils do not eat beef. So if the problem was beef, South Indian students would have objected too.
5. Do Not Make Railway Reservations in Tamil Or Else
This arrogant and violent attitude goes beyond students. Even people working in Indian government offices show their arrogance and contempt for Tamil. In September 2009, a local Tamil woman Lakshmi went to Computerized Passenger Reservation System (CPRS) Center at the Tirumailai MRTS station and filled out the reservation form in Tamil. The employee at the Senior Citizens Counter did not know Tamil and asked her to explain each item in English. This woman, who had high school education and knew English, did so. According to one news report the non-Tamil employee lost his patience and flung the reservation form at her. Another report said that as she was explaining the form in English, the man noticed that she had the wrong train number in the form and threw the form at her. Both these newspaper reports agree that the non-Tamil railway employee asked her to explain her reservation form in English and also that he flung the form at her but only differ on the reason. When she said that she has the right to fill the form in Tamil, two other non-Tamil employees joined the first man and hurled insults at her in English. Seeing what was happening a Tamil-speaking employee volunteered to make the reservation; the three non-Tamil employees “picked up a quarrel with him”. According to the news, only two employees at that office knew Tamil. [By the way, here is a bit of news. From 2009 onwards, you can buy tickets in Tamil at London Underground Rail (called "the Tube"). Yet in Tamil Nadu, those who try to buy tickets in Tamil are insulted.]
6. English Masters Went Out and Hindi Masters Came In
Railways and other Indian government offices have no requirement of knowing the local language but every employee must be proficient in Hindi. Seeing that they can work in Indian government offices anywhere in India in their mother tongue, Hindians get arrogant, abuse local people who do not know Hindi and expect that state government offices, schools and businesses also use Hindi, observe their holidays and serve their type of food.
Why are people who do not know Tamil appointed to central government jobs requiring regular contact with local people? Should the local people learn the language from a thousand miles away in order to deal with government officials in their own area? Or, should those who come to make a living here from a thousand miles away learn the local language? Indian government’s answer is “Tamil people should learn the language a thousand miles away”.
Is this fair? Is this just? Is all that happened at midnight of August 15, 1947 is, “English masters went out and Hindi masters came in”? [NOTE: British rule over the Indian subcontinent ended on August 15, 1947.]

Now dont tell me its there in the whole world so its common…hahaha(pity on your ignorance) the biggest enemies of your communities are you guys(MR HINDI AND MR TAMILAN)…MR hindi you talk about national language but am sure that you have read more english than your hindi in your life,,you also might have really made an effort to learn english to get a job!!!(hahaha) the same applies to you MR Hindi hero,,go and take a walk in your neighborhood you would find millions of Hindi speaking beggars…..( come on Mr Hindi and Mr tamilan,, they are your people they either speak Tamil or Hindi,,i thought you guys will die for your language so i wonder how come you guys still have beggars in your communities) MR Tamil savior how many times you have gone to an orphanage in your state or lets say a leprosy center (those small children who speaks Tamil),, am sure that all you have done have is made a good deal of money for yourself and now infecting others with your disgusting thoughts!!!! Just because you guys had a mother and father go grow with who gave you a name, and a language to speak,,I wish you guys were orphans grew up in some gutter then it would be really fun to see for what language you guys would have fought for(TAMIL, HINDI OR FOOD)!!!!!!!!!!!
Enough! The same thing that goes for South Indians goes for North Indians as well – India is one country, and that don’t mean that South Indians have great (or nonetheless too great) pride of their culture, why, then, are the North Indians arguing? They too have great pride in their culture.
Folks, it is true that our fellow Indians down south hate Hindi being enforced on them. True, North Indians made first strike (by enforcing Hindi throughout), but why not we brush up our differences? By the way, Indians are free to use any language they want.
Moreover, racism in movies has to end. Bollywood movies make great exagerration of the Tamil language, their way of speaking English. But, as a child of mixed parenting (dad from Delhi/America, mom from Chennai – which technically makes me a American-Indian or Delhiite, to be specific), I admit the South Indians are quite better than us in their English. Moreover, the South Indians are the brain of our country, we North Indians are the workforce.
Never let North and South India seperate us into two countries! Peace to all! (and no more pro-North or South Indian posts or I’m gonna f**k the shit outta you guys in English…geddit?)
